Slow printing

The Plantin-Moretus Museum (a UNESCO World Heritage site) in Antwerp got a complete makeover and reopened only recently.

To announce the forthcoming opening, analog print factory Kastaar built two “printing bikes” – unique mobile printing presses. In the weeks before the reopening of the museum, the bikes showed up at events in Antwerp to hand print posters for people passing by.
And the collaboration with the museum hasn’t stopped since it reopened. Kastaar also designed and printed its own ‘product line’ for the museum shop. They selected some of the original 16th century wood block illustrations from the archive, and combined these with modern elements. They printed new postcards, coasters, seed bags, notebooks, calendars, bookmarks, aprons and a lot of small cards with typography… An additional reason to visit the museum AND its shop – if you ask me!

I love Lucy

I love people who make something special out of something ordinary. I love color. I love paper. I love mail. I love Lucy!

Lucy Halcomb is a Brooklyn-based illustrator/designer. She uses gouache to paint sweet illustrations on bright envelopes. Here are just a few exemples but you’ve got to follow her on instagram! Her posts will brighten your day.

Picture This

Lots of cool creative moms in our graphic design studio, so they immediately fell for this simple yet brilliant concept from Picture This Clothing.
Picture This lets children design their own clothes (currently just dresses). They turn their drawings into clothes that they can actually wear. Getting started is really easy! Print the outlines of the dress from their website, let your daughter get loose, send the picture of her design to Picture This and they make the dress. For real. So cool!
Since the launch of Picture This a few weeks ago, boys’ moms have been begging for a simple boys’ T-shirt outline as well… I guess it won’t take long for their dreams to be fulfilled! To be continued.

Summer fun

When we’re not working at Artoos|Hayez, we take on our other job: being fabulous moms/ dads/ aunties/ uncles/… 🙂  Especially during the summer holidays, we’re sharing cool ideas to keep the kids busy in a creative way. We might as well share some easy & fun stuff with you!

We’re in love with this book: Hirameki – Draw what you see, by Peng+Hu.

Naomi Okubo (°1985) is a Tokyo based painter who makes colorful paintings and stunning self-portraits hiding her face. Google her name, view the “image” results, and the colors pop off your screen! What an artist!

Artist statement: “The ideas for my work come from an inferiority complex and my experiences in adolescence. As an adolescent, everyone starts to care about how other people think of their appearances. In my personal experiences, when I changed my own image, people changed their attitude toward me. They started to concern me, and our relationship became better. I also realized the power of fashion and the fear of other’s watchful eyes. I have been interested in appearances ever since.”

Jean Jullien rocks

We love the work of Jean Jullien. This French graphic artist is currently living in London. His witty work ranges from illustration to photography, video, costumes, installations, books, posters and clothing.

The first illustrations shown above are from a series of illustration on the theme of food for the show Petit Appétit, at Colette & L’imprimerie, in Paris; followed by some illustrations from his book Holidays.

Jessica tells: While everyone loved the site, as the big day approached the desire to make something awesome and printed grew and grew. We decided to make a keepsake to give out to wedding guests that included all of the artwork from the site on one side (offset & gold foil) and the full timeline of how we got together on the back (2 color letterpress and gold foil). The fronts and backs were duplex together with gold edge painting.

Émilie and Virginie (Les Miniatures) are two Paris based sisters who translate their love for antique textiles, vintage patterns and cross stitching into contemporary designs and colours. Their mom does a lot of stitching for Miniatures’ unique pieces, but their happy designs and patterns have also been licensed by French company Atomic Soda to appear (trompe l’œil style) on a wide range of products such as purses, boxes, and notebooks. Gorgeous!

La Tía Fina is a family company with a small production of handcraft jam. Even the packaging is handcraft: stamped with the fruit the jam is made of. Less is more.

DIY Plastic Recycling

As paper lovers, we are also recycling lovers – here at Artoos|Hayez. No wonder Precious Plastic got out attention.
After getting to know Boyan Slat, the Dutch student behind the ocean cleanup, there now is Dave Hakkens. He also is a bright Dutchman, and he invented Precious Plastic, a series of DIY machines that turn unwanted plastic into usable objects or raw materials. The machines can be made at home using universal materials and basic tools available around the world. Blueprints, a series of detailed instructional videos, the download kit, … they’re all available online, shared via open source.

If you’re looking for me: I’m cleaning out the garage to make room for my personal Precious Plastic recycler!

Insane

I’m afraid of heights. And of lots of other things as well. When I’m on instagram though, I’m attracted to urban explorers’ accounts. They climb skyscrapers and monuments, and take pictures of their feet, casually dangling above the abyss. They are chill and happy. I’m like ‘GET THE F*CK OFF YOU INSANE PIECE OF SH*T!!’.
Anyway, The Creators Project wrote a nice article about the fascinating urbex scene. A scene that makes you see the world, and some crazy people that inhabit it, from a truly unique angle.

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma always loved playing with building blocks. He got to design his own tsumiki for More trees, a foresty conservation organization founded by renown musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. Miniature treehouses

LA-based artist Jedediah Corwyn Voltz builds miniatures for films and other projects. It leaves him with huge bins of scrap fabrics, wood, … He started making little fantasy constructions out of that stuff, and that lead up to a collection of 25 miniature treehouses. Simply gorgeous!

Loving the work of Gianluca Gimini. Back in 2009 he began pestering friends and random strangers, walking up to them with a pen and a sheet of paper asking to immediately draw a men’s bicycle, by heart. He now has a collection of hundreds of drawings, and decided to do something with it: he rendered them as if they were real. Great idea. Great work. Don’t you agree?

How to survive a creative block. 5 easy but life changing tips

Creativity is a strange thing. One day you’re bursting with ideas, other days it is The Big Void, and you’re stuck wondering what’s wrong and ‘if you completely lost it’. On the internet, you’ll find a massive amount of tips&tricks how to boost your creativity. These I find the most helpful… Maybe they’ll work for you too? 🙂

Restrict yourself
Force yourself to work within strict limitations. For example: trying to explain something using only 250 words and a visual. Your brain will come up with pretty amazing workarounds.

360° view
Don’t try to rush to the solution to your problem, but sit back and examine the problem in different ways. Try to re-conceptualize the problem. Tackle it from a different angle than the obvious one.

Step back
Take a step back. Handle the problem as if it isn’t yours. Create a (psychological) distance. It will make the problem more accessible. It’s like giving love advice: it’s always easier when you’re not personally involved.

Move
Staring at your screen won’t help you when you have a creative block. Exercise is important for creativity. Get your heart pumping. Move! It gives you fresh energy and puts you in a positive mood. You will see solutions much quicker.

Be inspired by the absurd
Our mind is constantly trying to make sense. Confronted with absurd things, it goes in overdrive, trying to work out what’s happening. So, if absurd situations tickle the brain, what more excuses do you need to watch a bit of Monty Python next time you’re stuck?

Hipster in stone

And just when you thought you’ve seen it all, there is French photographer Léo Caillard with “Hipsters in stone”. A simple concept (dress up ancient statues) but what an great execution!

Inspired? This is the way Caillard worked his magic (as read on resourcemagonline.com): Caillard started by shooting the statues from afar. He then casted the appropriate models with matching physiques of the Greek Agora sculptures, dressed them in contemporary hipster clothing and shot their elegant stances in a studio space. The lights, of course, were adjusted accordingly to recreate the museum’s spotlight conditions. Through this rather strenuous process, Caillard arrived at the first raw shot of his imagination. Once the detailed shooting came to a close, all the images were sent off to Persani for post-production work for a second round of dreadful clicking.

Card game for designers

Designer. A strange species. Buys food based on packaging. Avoids stores with horrible logos. Refuses to read texts in Comic Sans. Buys games that look good. Yep “look good”, not “look fun”.
So one of our designers introduced mozaa to the work floor. And lucky us: the stunning designed game is fun to play as well.

Waar liefde voor verzamelingen, etnografie en fotografie samenkomen, daar vind je Every thing we touch van Paula Zuccotti. Deze Argentijnse ontwerpster vroeg aan 62 mensen om een hele dag alles te noteren waarmee ze in aanraking kwamen; met uitzondering van ‘vaste’ zaken zoals meubels, handvaten, lichtschakelaars, … Door alle voorwerpen vervolgens chronologisch in één beeld te fotograferen, maakte Paula een 24-uur-snapshot van hun levens.
Paula noemt de foto’s zelf tijdcapsules van 2015 omdat ze een goed beeld geven van hoe we vandaag leven en wat we bezitten. Daarom wou ze absoluut ook enkele bijzondere levensstijlen in beeld brengen die op sterven na dood zijn: zo ging ze bijvoorbeeld naar Arizona voor een 24-uur-snapshot van een cowboy en naar Tokyo voor eentje van een geisha.
Rake portretten, ook al is er geen mens op te zien.

Brood en spelen

Freaks zijn het, mijn collega’s van de studio. Geen Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto of FIFA 16 voor hen, maar ze zijn verslingerd aan Creative games for graphic designers. Op deze pagina staan links naar allerlei grafische spelletjes en apps. Logo’s of fonts herkennen, RGB-codes raden, kleuren van elkaar onderscheiden, juiste spatiëringen toevoegen (geeuw)… onze vormgevers vinden het de max!

En OK, toegegeven, sommige spelletjes vind ik zelf ook tof 🙂

De kunst van het snijden

Adembenemend, de portretten van de Koreaanse Yoo Hyun. Gemaakt met veel geduld, precisie en een ongetwijfeld héél vaste hand. Door kleine reepjes papier weg te snijden met een mesje, maakt Yoo Hyun hyperrealistische portretten waar ik als papierzot helemaal weg van ben.

Dries en Essena

Gisteren gebeten door twee artikels waarin social media centraal staan en de manier waarop we ons daarop tonen. Het ene artikel ging over Tinder In, het nieuwe project van Dries Depoorter. Depoorteris een mediakunstenaar uit Gent die programmeertaal en digital media gebruikt om zijn controversiële werk te creëren. Voor zijn laatste project zoekt hij de Linked In profielfoto’s op van vrouwen die hij op zijn Tinder tegenkomt. Hij toont beide foto’s naast elkaar en het resultaat verrast niet: Linked In en Tinder zijn twee aparte werelden waarin we een andere kant van onszelf laten zien. Of Depoorter met zijn project de privacy van de vrouwen schendt? Voer voor discussie. Wat wel vaststaat, is dat je zijn Tinder In foto’s tot gisteren nog ongecensureerd kon bekijken; maar dat ze vandaag blurred op zijn website staan. Hij zegt daarover: “With this, I do not have the intention to expose any person in particular. My intention is to mock privacy in general. I want to expose what can be exposed so easily without us realizing it. From now on, I will continue this project without anyone being recognisably pictured. The online discussion that erupted since the project went online, shows that you don’t need anyone’s permission to debunk someone’s ‘apparent’ privacy. It is interesting to see that this project effectively shows how people think about being visible online, even though in daily life, people hardly seem to be concerned.”
Bekijk zeker ook het andere verrassende werk van Depoorter op zijn website en zijn project JayWalking dat op 18/11 in première gaat in Amsterdam!

In hetzelfde straatje kwam ik ook Essena O’Neill tegen, een meisje van deze tijd. 19 jaar, model, opgegroeid met social media. Zo eentje die er echt geld mee verdient dankzij haar schare van meer dan 500 000 fans (yep, een half miljoen!)… Tot Essena er genoeg van had, van het toneel spelen. Vorige week. Ze verwijderde haar YouTube-kanaal, Tumblr en Snapchat en gooide haar Instagram overhoop: ze verwijderde meer dan tweeduizend foto’s en veranderde de captions van de resterende foto’s. In de nieuwe beschrijvingen deelt ze de waarheid achter het perfecte plaatje.



De biecht van het meisje blijkt een inspiratiebron voor veel leeftijdsgenoten. Het bewijs? Op enkele dagen tijd steeg haar volgersaantal tot meer dan 700 000! Everybody loves the new Essena! Volg haar nieuwe leven zonder leugens op www.letsbegamechangers.com.

I love Emily

Halloween, de ideale dag om Emily the Strange in de spotlight te plaatsen. Hoewel ze dat zelf niet wil natuurlijk. De heerlijk tegendraadse gothic Emily houdt van de nacht en van haar vier katten. Het eigenwijze karaktertje werd in 1991 ontworpen door Nathan Carrico voor Santa Cruz Skateboards. 24 jaar later is ze nog altijd hetzelfde bijzondere meisje van 13. Grafisch zó sterk. I LOVE her (and she probably hates it).

Monsterlijk mooi

Last minute op zoek naar een halloweenmasker? In de Etsy shop van Wintercroft vind je een paar knappe modellen. Na betaling kan je alle plannen en instructies downloaden en met wat handigheid (én lijm én oud papier) pruts je een hip geometrisch masker in elkaar.

J’adore! Vous deux?

Simpel idee. Excellente uitvoering. Thomas Olivier aka Tom le French (bekijk die kerel zijn portfolio!) maakte de sublieme reeks “Frenchification : Album Covers”. Tijdloze lp-hoezen letterlijk vertaald naar het Frans. Aan het artwork en de typografie veranderde hij verder niets. De elpees hebben meteen een zekere je ne sais quoi…
Mijn favoriet? Moeilijk kiezen, maar het aaibare BISOU vind ik hilarisch. De hele reeks vind je hier. Check it out!

Tuning is not a crime

Ik word er helemaal vrolijk van! De Amsterdamse fotograaf Max Siedentopf sluipt door de nacht om willekeurige mensen te trakteren op een pimp-my-ride-ervaring. “Individualiteit, zelfexpressie en status zijn tegenwoordig belangrijk, maar toch zie je maar weinig persoonlijke auto’s. Als je het mij vraagt is je auto een mooie kans om je uit te drukken. Ik dacht, ik doe de mensen een plezier en doe het voor ze.”
Cartuning met karton en tape, ‘t is eens wat anders. Dank u Max! Briljant!

Fontastisch!

Nou nou, ik kan kan al raden wat élke graphic designer dit jaar op zijn verlanglijstje voor kerst heeft staan… Als de mannen van Adobe een beetje doorwerken, that is. Maak kennis met het prototype van een nieuwe Adobe applicatie waarmee je zelf fonts kan ontwerpen.
Badass, zoals de man met de baard het samenvat.

Vlieg met me mee

Toen mijn dochtertje mij een paar jaar geleden een paar verfrommelde snoeppapiertjes liet zien en zei “Ik ga die bewaren, die zijn mooi” kon ik alleen maar denken “Oh help, ze is zoals mij!”. Het werd uiteindelijk niets met die verzameling snoeppapiertjes, hoewel het eigenlijk heel mooi kan zijn: veel van hetzelfde maar toch anders. Harry Smith (1923-1991) was er een krak in, in verzamelen. Paper Airplanes: The Collections of Harry Smith: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume I is een boek van 240 pagina’s dat 251 papieren vliegtuigjes laat zien. Smith vond ze allemaal in de straten van New York. Het resultaat van 20 jaar verwondering. Ik vind het prachtig, al die vliegtuigjes. Papier dat eigenlijk bestemd was voor de prullenmand. Nu kunst. Dankzij fotograaf Jason Fulford.

Verven op gevoel

Het Japanse ontwerpduo Ima Moteki maakte een verfdoos met “Naamloze Verf”. Zo willen ze kinderen anders leren kijken naar kleur. Op elke verftube staat uit welke primaire kleuren ze is opgebouwd en in welke proportie. Wat een geniaal idee! Helemaal weg van.

Het iconische rode ‘wormlogo’ werd in 1974 ontworpen in het kader van het “Federal Graphics Improvement Program”. In ’92 moest de vertrouwde worm het toneel ruimen en werd de ‘meatball’ (de voorloper van de worm) terug uit de kast gehaald. Een beetje designer krijgt instant stuiptrekkingen van zo’n manoeuvre. Zo ook Jesse Reed en Hamish Smyth. Zij wierven onlangs via kickstarter voldoende fondsen om de NASA Graphics Standards Manual (1974, Danne & Blackburn) opnieuw uit te brengen. Design history voor op de betere salontafel.

Joepie, post!

Oh ja, dames en heren, i confess: ik stam uit het pre-e-mailtijdperk. Als tiener was ik een verwoed brievenschrijver. Aan elk kampje hield ik minstens 3 pennenvriendinnen over. Brieven geschreven op wc-papier, omslagen gemaakt uit posters van de Joepie, volledige brieven in spiegelschrift, … been there, done that. Avonden lang zat ik achter mijn bureauke enveloppen te versieren en vol te tekenen.
De post verkocht toen nog postzegels van alle mogelijke waarden. Ik zie me nog altijd staan in het postkantoortje van ons dorp, bladeren door het dikke boek met postzegels. Voor 12 frank postzegels kiezen… Feest! “Er is weer een nieuwe reeks, mooi hé,” postbode Jan (die zelf achter het loket zat als zijn ronde gedaan was) kende me maar al te goed.
Eh ben oui, ik stuur tegenwoordig ook meestal snelle e-cards en Facebook-wensen, maar er gaan toch ook regelmatig échte wenskaarten de deur uit. En ja, dan moét ik de enveloppe wat opvrolijken… De volautomatische sorteermachines van bpost kunnen er misschien niet mee lachen, maar de postbodes vast wel!

Aaah, een portie goed collagewerk, daar kikker je van op! Meet Sammy Slabbinck, artiest uit eigen land. Virtuoos met schaar en pritt. Werk van nu met een vintage feel. J’adore!

Literatuurcriticus Hellmuth Karasek recenseert de nieuwe IKEA catalogus. Must see voor wie er nog aan twijfelt of Duitsers humor hebben.

De wereld van Britt

Ze schrijft, ze fotografeert, ze tekent, … de Amerikaanse Britt Appleton is een grappige griet. Abonneer je op haar nieuwsbrief en ze mailt je regelmatig een nieuw stripverhaaltje. Vandaag was het deze over “If I could do Middle school again“. Herkenbaar.

Goed gezien!

Anamorfoses. Zo heet dat blijkbaar, de optische illusies die de Zwitserse kunstenaar Felice Varini maakt. Je ziet ze ook in de machtige videoclip “The writing’s on the wall” van OK GO.

En het is eigenlijk hetzelfde principe als de reclame die je langs voetbalvelden ziet liggen (de enige reden waarom ik soms naar Stadion kijk).

Onderbroekenlol voor graphic designers

Graphic designer Curtis Canham startte een kickstarter-project voor zijn boek A-holes. A type book.
In dit atypische, grappige typografieboek bekijkt hij de letter A door de lens van zijn negatieve ruimte: Curtis focust op wat hij noemt the A-hole (het A-gat). Dat leidt tot hoofdstukken als: A-hole anatomy, Historic A-holes, A-hole movements, Infamous A-holes, … Typografische onderbroekenlol quoi!

Back to the roots

“Mag ik eens zien? Mag ik eens zien?”. Ik heb de foto nog maar genomen of mijn dochter wil hem al zien op het schermpje van mijn smartphone. Zo normaal voor haar. Ik – oh wat worden we oud! – herinner me nog levendig hoe spannend het was om foto’s af te halen bij de fotograaf, een week nadat we de filmrolletjes hadden binnengebracht.
… En het kan nog trager, ambachtelijker en analoger. Ik zag op Facebook een prachtige foto van een vriend, getrokken door Studio Braxton in Brussel. De foto leek uit een andere tijd te komen. Scherp, gedetailleerd, geposeerd. Hij werd gemaakt met natte plaat fotografie (collodium fotografie). Op zoek naar méér kwam ik Ian Ruhter tegen, een Amerikaanse fotograaf die zich ‘alchemist’ noemt. Hij heeft een busje omgebouwd tot een enorme camera en trekt daarmee door Amerika om mensen en landschappen vast te leggen op de gevoelige plaat. Het spel van de chemische vloeistoffen op de plaat zorgt voor een onverwacht, mystiek tonenspel dat als een waas over de foto hangt.

Mis ‘m niet!

In het zesde leerjaar deed een klasgenoot een spreekbeurt over camouflage. Hij toonde prentjes, en wij maar zoeken naar het beest. Onvergetelijk! Net als deze Liu Bolin. The invisible man, wordt hij genoemd. Liu Bolin is een Chinese kunstenaar die zich als canvas laat beschilderen zodat hij opgaat in zijn omgeving. Tegenwoordig maakt hij echter ook anderen ‘onzichtbaar’. Een mooie reportage met interview vond ik hier op youtube.

Fleurig

Hij houdt van me, hij houdt niet van me. Verder kom ik niet als ik eens wil prullen aan een bloemetje. De Amerikaanse Bridget Beth Collins daarentegen. Als Flora Forager post ze op Instagram fleurige kunstwerkjes gemaakt van bloemetjes, besjes en blaadjes. Voor de liefhebbers: prints van haar vergankelijke kunst zijn te koop op floraforager.com. En o ja, mevrouw Collins heeft ook nog een inspirerend mooie blog: bridgetbeth.com. Genoeg eyecandy om het weekend in te zetten, lijkt me!

CMYK borduurwerk

Aaah, vrienden en vijanden van de studiomates, long time no see! Beetje te druk gehad met andere zaken, waaronder een royal visit, maar we zijn weer helemaal terug. En hoe! Op zoek naar een manier om offset drukken uit te leggen aan kinderen, stootte ik op het werk van de Estse Evelin Kasikov. Ze borduurt in CMYK. How cool is that!? Evelin startte ermee toen ze nog studeerde en werd meteen ontdekt door grote namen als NIKE, The Guardian en WIRED Magazine. Helemaal mijn ding, hoe ze vertrekt vanuit een rationele benadering van een beeld om het daarna met veel precisie uit te voeren met naald en draad. De puntdiktes van CMYK-drukwerk imiteert ze door haar kruisjes groter of kleiner te maken en door voor dikkere of dunnere draad te kiezen. Ik ben er helemaal weg van. Et vous?

Klein maar fijn

Zo eenvoudig maar zo mooi. En grappig. Javier Pérez, een designer uit Ecuador, neemt wat hij bij de hand heeft en laat zijn verbeelding spreken. Check zijn instagram voor veeeeeel meeeeeer werk!

Zonneke nodig!

Supermooi, de schaduwfoto’s van Alexei Bednij! “Wow, die man moet geduld hebben, en een perfecte timing!”. Mensen, duiven, katten, honden – ze lopen kriskras door elkaar. Hun schaduwen raken net niet.
Als je de foto’s echter beter bekijkt, zie je dat de schaduwen in verschillende richtingen vallen.
Photoshop dus. Maar wel meesterlijk gedaan met een wondermooi resultaat.
